About the Chorus

We lead singing circles that inspire deeper connection to ourselves, each other, and the Earth. We believe in the healing, freedom, and joy that can come through communal singing, and aim to make that experience more widely accessible.

We believe that singing is our birthright. We believe that our relationships to our voices are sacred, and that everyone deserves the chance to be heard and to create beauty together. We recognize the severe lack of opportunities for people to sing outside of houses of worship and committed choirs, and strive to provide accessible, low-commitment, judgment-free spaces for people of all relationships with their voice to feel welcomed. We draw inspiration from the modern ‘Community Singing’ movement, Bobby Mcferrin’s CircleSinging practice, and the singing cultures of historical social movements and folk traditions. We recognize our role as a small part of a larger wave of people and communities weaving singing back into our social fabric and everyday experience of being alive.

What to expect at a Circle:

Warm Up: We use vocal and movement warm ups to open our sound-making vessel, in a way that feels good. We incorporate community building and playful improv in these warm ups to create connection between the voices of our circle.
Learning Songs: We teach simple songs call-and-response style, with no written music. We spend about 5-10 min learning the rhythm and notes well enough that we may be fully present in the song, not fixating on remembering the words or notes. We then sing the song long enough that it grows and grows with unique contributions of spontaneous harmony, added layers, and soloing.
Deepening w Improv & Movement: We use simple improvisational practices to loosen up our voices, and invite more access to creative flow. We may also use movement, meditation, or other somatic practices to aid in our embodiment. The energy of each circle is different and shaped by whoever shows up – it may move from playfulness, to groove, to calming presence in the span of an hour.
