About the Chorus

The Metropolitan Chorale brings together dedicated singers to share the joy of learning and performing a diverse repertoire of traditional and contemporary choral music. We strive for a level of quality that engages, educates, and inspires our membership and our audience.

Founded in 1979, the Metropolitan Chorale is a 100-voice auditioned chorus that is recognized as one of Metro Boston’s premier choral ensembles. Since 2004, the ensemble has been under the direction of Dr. Lisa Graham who also serves as the Evelyn Barry Director of Choral Programs at Wellesley College. The emphasis on imaginative and innovative programming, combined with excellence in performance and commitment to collaborations, yields a unique artistic contribution to the Boston arts community. Partners have included the Boston Pops, Brookline Puppet Showplace Theatre, Brookline Symphony, Callithumpian Consort, Chorus Pro Musica, Commonwealth Chorale, New England Philharmonic and Zamir Chorale.

The Chorale has been praised by The Boston Musical Intelligencer for “its fine blend,  well-shaped phrasing,” as well as its “sophisticated but equally heartfelt” interpretations.  Its recent collaboration with Chorus pro Musica on Leoš Janáček’s 1898 cantata Amarus was highlighted by the Intelligencer in their “Critics’ Faves” for 2019. In a review of the Chorale’s debut appearance with the Boston Pops in December 2012, Broadway World applauded the ensemble for its “outstanding vocal talent [and] exceptional charisma.” Repertoire has included Rachmaninoff’s All Night Vigil, Verdi’s Messa da Requiem, Steven Sametz’s Child’s Requiem, The Unicorn, the Gorgon and Manticore by Menotti, Medieval Bestiary by R. Murray Schafer, and a program titled The Creative Impulse featuring protest songs from around the world and exploring music as an agent of change.
