About the Position:

A contract position as Choral Director of Reading Community Singers, a non-audition, SATB, inclusive community chorus of 50-80  members.  RCS performs two concerts in December and two in May, one each season at Reading Memorial High School and one each season at a senior residence.  Stipend is $250-$280 per rehearsal, depending on experience.  Official job description is available via a link on the homepage of the RCS website (readingcommunitysingers.org).

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • To coordinate and oversee music selection and choir direction for the Reading Community Singers spring concert seasons beginning with the Spring 2027 season.  Responsibility could expand to include the Fall/Holiday season.
  • Regular rehearsals take place on Tuesday evenings from 7:30-9:30pm, beginning the last Tuesday in January, at the Old South United Methodist Church at 6 Salem Street in Reading.  For 2027, the first rehearsal will be on January 26th.
  • Some Sunday rehearsals may be required.
  • The concert will take place in the first or second Saturday evening in May at the Reading Memorial High School Performing Arts Center (PAC).  Final date is not known for certain at this time.  Dress rehearsal is the evening before (Friday).
  • Music selections must be completed the preceding Fall, in consultation with the accompanist and Board of Directors.  RCS has a substantial music library available.
  • To coordinate and oversee music selection and choir direction for additional performances at community or sporting events during the season, as needed.
  • To select and communicate with members of the band to play in the concert.

Qualifications and Education Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in music or equivalent experience
  • Minimum three (3) years’ experience with choir direction

Preferred Skills

  • Experience working with all-inclusive singers from high-school age through senior citizens.
  • Ability to balance range and music selection appropriate for an SATB non-audition community chorus.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and to relate well with people of varying backgrounds.
  • Classically trained music background in both conducting and pedagogy.
  • Strong conducting skills and excellent rehearsal skills including vocal coaching.
  • The ideal candidate will combine a thorough knowledge of choral, instrumental, and vocal performance with significant experience conducting and leading singers and instrumentalists in a broad range of repertoire and musical styles.
